Rated 2 out of 5 by from No Power. Broke the 2nd day I used it. I am a homeowner so did not need a professional saw, but wanted to replace my roughly 20+ year old Poulan 260 Pro that I bought at Lowes. It had always started easy and cut great, but several parts were wearing out so I decided to run up the road an buy a new saw. The salesman pointed me to the 251 when I told him I wanted an 18" bar. It started easy enough (despite the many reviews that say it does not), and for small limbs, it cuts just fine. Try taking down a 10" diameter tree or cutting a stump at the base and forget it. Binds up and bogs down. To make matters worse, the bolt that holds on the bar unscrewed from the frame when I went to remove the outer nut to change the chain (which dulled after 3 stumps). I will return it next week. As I side note, I got my old Poulan running and buzzed thru about 12 stumps and took another tree down without any hesitancy or having to change the chain. Very disappointed especially for the price (not to mention no case or extra chain).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This saw replaced my 028. Saw . My Wood Boss has been performing like a champ, Cut a lot of fire wood! Purchased this 2 Year’s ago. Have a larger Stihl saw ,but this Wood Boss is my go to 98% of the time. Great products!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent option in a smaller saw I owned a Stihl 026 for about 15+ years. It delivered reliable service to maintain trails, remove blowdowns and general utility work on a 325 acre tree farm/hunting property. I replaced it in July 2017 with a MS-271 that I used twice before dislocating a shoulder in an unrelated accident. The 271 became simply too much saw and I researched lighter options that would still get my jobs dome. The MS-251 is a very nice compromise...lighter saw by almost 2 pounds w/18-inch bar vs the 271. The engine has good power if you give it time to do its work..doesn't match the 271 but I am prepared for the trade off. Cuts up to 14 inch spruce with no problems but light enough for limbing & bucking for trail work.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Continual breakdowns I've gone through three Stihl saws in two weeks. The first two were lighter weight and we’re extremely hard to start. The first one froze up and the pull cord broke. The second one wouldn’t restart after an hour of use. I upgraded to the 251 and it worked great until the chain kept falling off. I took it back to the store and the trained Stihl tech said I was doing something wrong. He showed me how to tighten it (which I'd already done correctly) and then cut a log. The chain fell off. He tightened it again and got the same results. He then took it in for warranty repairs. I just picked it up and I'm hoping I can actually cut some wood. As a side note, the clerk who got the saw for me said she wouldn't start it for me because “it's the hardest saw she's ever tried to start” and didn’t want to risk dislocating anything.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Really hard to start! I have only had the saw 4 days, it started fine on day 1, took several pulls on day 2, on day 3, when I was running out of time on my "rental" splitter, and had only 2 cuts to make to finish up, it would not start! I followed the Hellebucks, sales persons instructions- (he did say that some customers have had starting issues with Stihl chainsaws- I thought how could a brand new Stihl, with its reputation be harder to start than my previous saws (both Poulan) so I was forwarned. -put on full choke, listen for what he called 'burp" --switch to half choke, pull to start, ---let warm for a few seconds and hit the throttle to disengage choke. Could not start to save my soul! After 45min. of trying, waiting for 10-15 min in between tries, I gave up on the saw, barely muscled the wood into the splitter and paid the extra fee for bringing it back late. The moral of this long-sad story is I would not recommend this saw to anyone, and unless I brought home a defective saw (quality control?) the Stihl reputation does not continue for me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice saw, runs clean Great saw. I picked up the original MS 250 when they had a deal on them, and that was a nice saw but it got stolen by some loser. I eventually picked up a 251, and to be honest, it runs cleaner and it's noticeable. Fumes probably aren't a big issue for a lot of people, but it was a difference I noticed between the saws. Starts easy, but let her warm up in idle for a while or she'll stall out.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Hard to start This is my 3rd and probably last Stihl chain saw. On its second use it took 10 minutes to get started. Used it for a while and then shut it off. Half hour later I tried to use it again and would not start. Took a long time and 40-50 pulls to get it started. Worse running chani saw I ever owned. Taking back to dealer to see if they can fix it.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from not reliable starts fine one day, the next day will not start, using fresh gas and oil. Cannot depend on this saw, have been using chain saws for over 40 years and this is the worst one I have ever owned

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great for price This thing is amazing- and feather-light! Mine has the 18" bar and runs like a champ. Cutting through some bigger green wood slowed it down just slightly, but for the size of this thing, there was no beating it! I loved every second using it- just wish I had more wood to cut!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Saw did what I asked it to do Used my saw for the first time this past weekend at our family farm. We had some trees go down along the fields and had to get them out of the way for the farmer to plant for the season. My saw did everything I asked it to cut. Two of the trees that went down were larger trees that I did what I could in order for the farmer to not lose any space in the field. Overall I was extremely happy with everything.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Bar nut comes out Tried to change the chain in the first two weeks and the bolt came out instead of the nut unscrewing. Had to bring it to two different dealers to resolve it and lost a weekend to clean up. Second one said they have seen it multiple times. They put it back in with loctite and I just have to hope it doesn't happen again I guess. Not the Stihl quality I was expected.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for around the yard! This is a lightweight saw that you can use for hours. Saw is very easy to start and maintain. Does not use a lot of extra oil or fuel. I would recommend this saw!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from You get what you pay for! My dad was a Homelite and McCulloch guy from way back and always said "you get what you pay for"! This time I decided to buy the BEST and that's a Stihl. Since I don't cut every week or weekend, the MS251 Wood Boss is the perfect saw for my needs. Starts on first pull after initial start and runs like a dream. Had to cut over 30 trees this weekend at our hunting land and it never missed a beat! Best purchase I've made in a long time. Thanks Stihl for continuing to make the best!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Saw This was a second saw for me. I needed something with more size and power without breaking the bank and buying a monster. This was a perfect selection. I purchased it from Morgan Power Equipment in Halifax, MA. The associate walked me through the pro’s and con’s to meet my needs. My entire arsenal of outdoor equipment is STIHL. The dependability outpaces all of the competition.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Wood Boss 251 So this is my first chainsaw. I've used them before but this is the first one I've bought. The saw worked great but the first day using it the chain came off the bar twice... The underside of the chain got burred up and now it wont slide through the bar. I'll have to take a metal file to it. I bought a STIHL replacement chain and the second day of using that it threw the chain off again. Same issue with the burrs on the underside of the chain. I was using the saw on light to medium sized tree limbs and the occasional tree trunk about 12 inches in diameter. I tightened the slack in the chain several times throughout using it. I bought a STIHL because everyone said they were the best but I didn't expect to have this issue.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just as described but better! Have used several new chainsaws on the market, but always had trouble starting those units. Since most fuel now has ethanol new products are being built with poor quality fuel lines. Stihl definitely takes notice to that as an issue. I've used pre-mix and other high end fuels to make sure this unit starts every-time. Since I lend this chainsaw to others alot I know they always dont use the proper fuel. I've never had one issue starting this unit. Is why I'll deferentially buy again. If your looking for a great saw to use when in need this is it. I've already bought another to have on hand for emergency's.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It's a Boss for sure Bought this saw for my property (large oak and pine), went through them like hot butter. This is my first saw and it will not be my last Stihl. Great tools for the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beast I've never owned a chainsaw before, so I knew that my 1st one had to be a great one. This thing is a beast. At first it took me a few tries to get it started nice I didn't know the compression was so high (as compared to my other equipment ). But once I got it started, this thing ate through everything. Very happy with the purchase.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Apparent same Stihl quality. Just what you would expect from a Stihl saw. Only problem is the difficulty of starting the saw for the first few times.
Date published: 2018-04-10
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good saw, except for fuel and oil tank caps. I don't understand why you can't make usable caps for the fuel and oil tanks. Everyone I have talked to hates them. They are extremely difficult to replace after filling. Just put some threads on them, like every other manufacturer!
Date published: 2018-04-07
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Value This is a very good saw for trimming trees and cutting firewood. The initial starting I would recommend NOT using full choke as it will flood the engine. After the first initial starting it is easy to start every time so far. I am very pleased, but I bought it for occasional use not as a professional logger. When used as intended I believe it will last a long time. I feel I bought the best tool for the money I spent and do not regret it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A good chainsaw overall This Chainsaw is a good product if your cutting wood isn't thicker than 40 cm. I use this chainsaw with the Stihl RS chain and it goes really good.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great saw. Just what I expected from a Stihl ! This saw replaces a 30 year old Stihl “025” . I plan to use only alcohol free gas in this one to get even more years out of it.The new MS251 is just what I expected from a Stihl. It starts easily, runs strong, and uses the chains from my old 025 !Great Saw !!
